I’d like to imagine that she just sort of spaced-out during the entire award ceremony, then found the medal around her neck when she got home. She has no idea what it is or where it came from, but dang, it sure is sparkly! =D
 
Derpy: “Oh, hey, this is really pretty! I’d better put this in my dresser so I don’t lose it!”
 
And there the medal sits, completely forgotten. Everypony assumes she’s just very humble because she’s never shown it off or bragged about it… but in reality she hasn’t because, memory-wise, she can’t xD .

That’s honestly not far from canon. Derpy was the only non-Wonderbolt to charge Tirek. That means either she’s such a badass the Wonderbolts recruited her, or she’s such a badass she just joined in for the hell of it :D  
 
She also straight-up sacrificed herself to save Twilight Sparkle in the movie. She’s probably the bravest and most selfless character in the series :D

Great, now you’ve got me thinking of Derpy as the badass captain of a deep-space station, who occasionally has to “interpret the will” of local wormhole aliens, who are considered gods by the goofballs on a nearby planet.

Hey, she stays employed for a reason, right? Just because her eyesight isn’t great and she gets confused easily doesn’t mean she can’t be great with foreigners and act sort of like a mail-carrying international Equestrian emissary =D .

Derpy might not be the agile and accurate flier she was in her youth but she’s still a very capable flier who delivers all over the world. She’s seen literally EVERYTHING and is not scared of lamias, dragons, harpies, sirens, you name it, and knows exactly how to deal with all of them. She has a LOT of foreign citizenships XD
