Flight of Dragons, a forgotten Rankin-Bass classic! [/bq]

ABronyAccount is spot-on, it's The Flight Of Dragons, which imho is one of the best animated movies ever outside of Disney (I'm also a total Disney nut xD).

Excuse you.

Actually, it's stated in the movie (and I believe in the fantasy biology book the movie's title comes from) that the dragons ability to fly is based on the creation of large amounts of hydrogen gas that is stored in chambers in their bellies, allowing them to become lighter than air (Peter actually states at one point: "Oh, you mean like a blimp!"). The hydrogen gas is made by stomach reactions as they eat large deposits of limestone on a regular basis.

They are explicitly stated to be unable to fly by wingpower alone - their wings are solely for steering. (Which is actually much more realistic, given the sheer size of dragons!) Expulsion of all the gases in the stomach chambers renders them incapable of flight until they build up sufficient internal pressure again.

Tl;dr - they're not fat, they're permanently bloated - because science b\*\*\*\*. :P
