You actually don’t need animal protein for adequate neurological development. =o I know this from personal experience.
Pinkie Pie said “we are vegetarians,” but she could have been referring to Earth Ponies and Buffalo. Unicorns, according to nordic folklore, have a reputation for being ravenous omnivores with a taste for human flesh. Villages would sacrifice bulls and bears to keep the unicorns at bay. So if ponyville ever has a food shortage, there’s a good chance Twilight Sparkle and Rarity will tuck into Fluttershy’s bear friend and Daisy the Cow’s husband.

More importantly, we get previews for comments now? That’s awesome.
Normal ponies aren’t actually the strict herbivores people think of them as being– they’ll eat eggs and grasshoppers and shed deer antlers all day long for the calcium and protein– so I see no reason why cartoon ponies should be any different. They drink and eat dairy products into adulthood, so they already don’t even fit the definition of a vegetarian, much less an herbivore.
My headcanon is that foals, once weaned, require more protein for proper childhood neurological development than can be provided by plant-based food sources, so they eat eggs and fish and maybe surplus chickens to a degree which adults– except for mares at “certain times of the month”– usually don’t.
Well done!
Anyway, ponies do have carnivorous pets, and Flutters was shown feeding some otters or ferrets fish, so there you go.
Wrong!
Both in mythology and out.
