Custom may be the wrong term. It’s not in practice any more, but it very much was a real thing. Keep in mind, woman used to be seen as property, and part of their value was in their virginity. As such, having sex outside of marriage made them less of value. Plus, The South was – and very much still is – highly religious, and children should being born out of wedlock was a sin. So to some, the only way to make sure things were right was to force the man to marry the woman. And if that required that it be done at gunpoint, so be it.

Not a law, just a custom. Doubt it was any sort of law. Although maybe the police would look the other way if any shooting was necessary.

It’s a term used here in the U.S. and maybe started here? Specifically, in The South. If a man had sex with a woman and got her pregnant when they weren’t married, then the man would be forced to marry the woman, often while someone in the woman’s family was holding him at gunpoint to make sure he went through with it.
