She’s also the only changeling with different eyes and a mane and a jagged horn. I doubt her shape difference had anything to do with reproduction, more likely she simply got her own unique design, largely based off an alicorn, because it was the writer’s way of making it visually obvious that she lead the changelings.

I’m of the headcanon that who nymphs were born to, and who laid which eggs just weren’t something that mattered during Chrysalis’s reign, because her whole thing was about the cumulative strength of the hive. Female changelings laid eggs, Chrysalis would gather them and they’d all be raised together as warriors.

Now that Chrysalis is gone, the hive has individual families again. Instead of an insect hivemind, they’re more like pack animals, now. Families that all live together and look out for each other in a community.

Yeah, ever since the S6 finale my S.O. has been thinking “without a queen, won’t the hive DIE OUT?”

There are probably fanfics where Thorax discovers that he and his new royal body have suddenly inherited that responsibility…

If chrysalis was gone, then how would the species continue to have younglings? If chrysalis was indeed the only way to have eggs, wouldn’t they try to keep her at the hive? She would be their species’ means to live on. It wouldn’t make sense in that sense that they would just let her go when they would need the only one who lays eggs for the changelings. The most valid explanation would be that the drones are the ones who give birth.

Either families in the post-Chrysalis order are of the adoptive sort, or the hive just never was the traditional social insect setup we all expected where only the queen could lay eggs…

(But if the latter, that wouldn’t explain why Chrysalis had been the only changeling with a different body type.)

Something tells me, though, that DHX and Hasbro won’t bother going into the specifics of it before the series is over.
