I think all it’s by perspective, the people care more about the developt of the main protagonist cause it’s supposed they already have, and show that interest in the background characters cause maybe they hope to someday puthey have an evolution or history. Like the episode in FIM when all the background characters started to have protagonist, if I’m not wrong, that episode were loved for the fandom.
