I’ve wanted an OC who’s an Umbrum even since reading the IDW comics, and now I have one called Sorpresa. ^^  
Yes, Umbrum are a species in the comics. They are essentially spooky eldrich shadow ponies and I love them.  
In the comics, King Sombra is also an Umbrum.

Really cool. Also i think it could be amazing seeing Umbrum race and their origin, why they decide to attacking crystal empire and why they look so eldritchy
