Definitely not the norm. Becomes difficult to protect the livestock from Coyotes, Mountain Lions, bears, etc. Not to mention protecting yourself from the same potential threats. Generally a basic 30-30 or 308 caliber rifle is chosen as a farm gun.
My grandfather’s farm had zero guns on the whole farm. He disliked them.

She’d probably have both, tbh. Applejack is basically southern, and gun culture is huge in the south. Plus you won’t find a farm owner in existsnce out there that doesn’t own at least 1 firearm.
