Twilight Sparkle - Limestone Pie:
Following the curses effect these two were one of the most clashing, Twilight immediately worked towards finding a fix of course, rolling over books and papers, old tombs and unsorted scolars journals.
Limestone of course was moved to the Chrystal castle but she was fairly vocal about her distaste, pulled away from her home, family and responsibilities the earth pony wanted to move, they could take the books and papers to the rockfarm !
But Twilight of course wanted to stick around her library and resources, working tirelessly.
Now of course not just their responsibilities clashed but their expectations too.
Limestone, a child of arranged marriage and with little time for romance or bonding in general, actually was a lot less worried about the course as most ponies, she was prepared to move towards her chosen mate and get closer but Twilight blocked.
Worried, scared and enraptured in her research Twilight pushed Limestone away, at first gently then later with less patience, rebuffing and denying the Earthpony and reassurance,comfort or kindness really.
So now Limestone is filled with anger and hurt, ripped from her home and caught up in a castle with a pony who seemingly wanted nothing to do with her she became hostile, arguing and snarlin.
At this point Spike stepped inbetween them, seeing his horse mom stressed by her work and then also getting yelled at by a choleric rock pony he became a biased mediator, often glaring at Limestone and blowing threatening smoke from draconic lungs to keep the eldest Pie away from Twilight.

If by “Settle things down” you mean “be a living wall of scales and fire to protect his mama” then.. yeah, he’s keeping things from escalating by being a literal living threat.
