Very on brand for the fandom to bawl their eyes out at news of the series ending and then a day or two later frothing rabidly at it for an insignificant detail.

I wouldn’t put it under the production staff doing it on purpose, knowing exactly what kind of reaction they’d get from the fandom.
 
I’d also expect to see this sort of thing in this last season too.

I stopped caring about what the writers were doing to the characters around season 3. What’s the point of giving a shit and letting people throw rocks at you because they feel they’re morally superior?
