Nyx isn’t Nightmare Moon. Luna is Nightmare Moon. Upon creation, Nyx had the memories and the dark power of Nightmare Moon, but from the start it was pretty clear that she wasn’t, no matter how much other ponies thought she was Nightmare Moon and (possessed) Spell Nexus tried to make her into Nightmare Moon.
 
That’s the way I view it, at least.

Well, Fluttershy was just a cowardly pegasus kid up until the very moment she first encountered animals. Butterflies do not represent her at all — unless we take into accout she becomes a vet in about ten years.  
The story ends with Nyx getting her buttstamp and little to nothing is known about what happens afterwards. You’re being unnecessarily judgemental.

It’s not that. She eventually remembers who she is. She even decides to go for the ‘old path’ until someone nearly DIES.  
I am just saying, a shield does not represent Nyx.  
As for crying. She cries a lot, despite everypony but two schoolyard bullies liking her.
 
But enough of me yapping around here. I will let it be.

So, a person is given a chance to live through childhood again, under different circumstances and turns out a different person altogether. That is somehow a problem. Okay, I got it.
 
People change when they grow up. Everybody cried when they were children.

If she were a clone. Okay.  
She is not. She is Nightmare Moon reborn. Not a clone. Nightmare Moon. Stated so in the story.  
Her personallity may be different, yes, but I don’t think a cutiemark at protecting is even her thing. If your really NEED to give her a different CM, give her something more.. emotional, that fits to the character.

She is Nightmare moon, reborn, without memory as a foal. The memory returns later which makes this story so stupid. Why call it ‘past sins’ if there are no past sins to begin with?  
She IS Nightmare moon, no matter how you twist it. Change her design, the name of the story and the entire ‘Nightmare moon reborn’ thing and maybe THEN we can talk.

In all honesty, it never made sense that she would obtain an other cutiemark, if she is essentially Nightmare Moon in first place.  
And aside from that, the crybaby is good at ‘protecting’? Yea, like that is the case. She was really, really bad in it, until the end. Unlike ponies that have talents, are hinted to have those talents.
