Mine is that they’re richer than Filthy Rich, who pays royalties, and the family as a whole owns twenty five percent of known Equestrian land. They have “founding communities” in their tree roots. They could literally buy Prince Blue blood thrice over and then just pawn him off for pocket change. They just don’t. Why would they?  
The Oranges are a direct branch family of the Apples and own several industries and hold themselves a pretty bit, but the Apple Main Family gets the Lion’s share.

Crowley, that it’s a nice headcanon, but they can’t be from Cloudsdale, Apple Bloom list all the cities were the Apple family come from. My headcanon says that the cloud-walking spell is permanent (but reversible), that could explained why the main six survive in the tornado incident in the Wonderbolt Academy.
