If you haven’t even knew about what’s it about by now, it is basically a story about young fellows criss-crossing dimensions after one of them had his daemon (a soul-like animal companion) cut off from him. Then they battle an army of angels that oppressively rule all the dimensions.
 
I’m a Christian, but I enjoy the books for their fantastic setting.

His Dark Materials is basically what you get if you take The Chronicles of Narnia and make it into a secular soapbox rather than a Christian soapbox.
 
I think that’s fairly accurate. That’s what Pullman more or less set out to do, as he really disliked The Chronicles of Narnia.

OP here, I never watched the Movie OR read the book, so I had no idea it was controversial. Is namesake an appropriate tag for this? As far as I know the word Lyra comes from the constellation, not the book character. (Although I could be wrong)

I never got a chance to read the second book, nevermind the third, but the first is one of my all time favorite books.
 
The fact they completely fucked up with the movie (at least IMO) pisses me off. I wanted to see little commando girl on the arctic base, like in the book. Blowin’ shit up.
