Dang, I’m embarrassed to admit that I didn’t think that there might be a reason why no one’s buying from that vendor until when I read this.
 
This seems to be a pattern with Starlight.

Hard to pin down at times since both of them doesn’t act very mature. Starlight is just more of a blue oni but overall, the maturity ball is often for and back but never actually having a permanent holder.

Sooooo, does that mean that despite superficial appereances and drama queen behavior, Trixie is (marginally at least) in some sense more mature than Starlight?

Despite having a “job” now as a guidance counselor, I get the impression Starlight is used to living without income with Twilight just supporting her. Before that, she ran a village that probably also didn’t exactly have a typical economy. It seemed more like everyone lived in, y’know, a commune of sorts.
 
Trixie on the other hand clearly has to work and has always struggled with finances. That was part of the backstory between Boast Busters and Magic Duel, where she had to work at a rock farm instead of her chosen career.
 
So, yes. I think it is a combination of neither of them having much money, Glimmer having very little maturity in regards to finances, and Trixie probably being the richer of the two sadly.
 
To me, the episode came across as Glimmer more or less freeloading, and not really having any concept of the etiquette expected of that situation.

She live in a castle with the princess for 3 seasons including this one with tons of delicious meal and Trixie live in tight space in her wagon on the road since the beginning of the show.  
Remember people if you want to travel with your friends that travel frequently, always trust them when involved with food.

I’m under the impression that Starlight’s been spoiled by living with Twilight for so long that she forgot what living cheaply on the move was like.

My assumption was Trixie provided the ride and Starlight pitched in for the expenses.

I presumed that the expense for the road trip was all on Trixie when watching the episode. Made me more than confused by Starlight’s behavior…

Starlight forgot the first rule of eating on the road: empty bars/stalls are not to be trusted.

I can see this could happen to Starlight. If this happen in the episode I would be laughing so hard.
