Description
This episode would’ve made so much more sense if they’d actually switched talents, but found ther new jobs boring and unfulfilling.
Did they get memories of working their new jobs, but not the memories of how to do them properly? As it stands, it makes it come across like they saw their cutie marks change and it just never occurred to them that their talents had stayed the same.
The whole episode was nonsense. Purportedly, Larson’s original draft was very different from the finished product. Maybe the original was less of a clusterfuck.

Hmm…
Look I’m not a writer so I can only assume as to why this makes sense. Just as you can only assume as to why this doesn’t make sense.
Let’s just agree to disagree and not carry on any further in this discussion.
It was a memory spell, not an anti-mind control spell.
Okay… It’s clear to me that I have no chance of convincing you that this actually made sense. Every valid point I’ve made gets shut down so I’m going to use a last resort.
It made sense because unlike Discord, the mane 6 weren’t under a mind control spell.
There, done.
Rarity just used her telekinesis to move clouds. Weather control also has nothing to do with Rainbow’s cutie mark.
I wasn’t talking about those abilities.
Rarity gained the ability to control weather but didn’t have the talent to control it properly.
Rarity didn’t gain the ability to fly, and Rainbow Dash didn’t gain the ability to communicate with animals. The only thing any of them gained was faulty memories about what jobs they were supposed to be doing.
It means they will take on the abilities of another but they won’t get the talents.
Example: Rarity got Rd’s ability but not her talent.
Difference between Ability and Talent: Ability means you can do something, whereas Talent means you’re good at something.
Anyways… Why post this now? I’m pretty sure that the fandom already had this discussion when the episode aired, five years ago.

What does it mean to change their “true selves” if their true talents stay the same?
A memory spell only would have been necessary if they were under mind control, like in Return to Harmony, here the fix was making them physically realize what they’re truly good at, instead of removing mind control.
For me, the episode was well written… Also, this is old news.
