I sure do hope the show staff would portray Filthy Rich as a nice guy (just like Fancy Pants). However, on the comic side, it seems to be different though. Remember issue #46 (or so) where Filthy tried to become the mayor when a natural disaster happens? At least DT was really not impressed by what he’s doing…
He was very polite to Granny Smith, and he frowned when Tiara was laughing at her, and he gets along with the Apple family, and does business with them. Not to mention he helped fight the Tantabus. >>934928
So honestly, I don’t see why some fans assume he’s evil/greedy just because he’s a businessman. He probably could be too busy to spend time with Tiara, so she probably is a bit neglected, and she seems to desire more attention from him, and such. It’s kinda interesting to think Tiara has one nicer parent, and one mean parent, which could help explain where her seldom seen good side comes from.
I think the only positive we have on Filthy Rich is just that he makes Diamond Tiara help in the zap apple ritual. He probably isn’t an absolute jerk, but we never see him doing really good things. So he could just as easily be a neglectful parent, greedy, and more worried about his family legacy than the ponies in it. And as much as DT looks up to her father and wants him to give her attention, we’ve seen her with her butler more than with Filthy Rich. Between her snobby mom, absent father and servile butler, I can imagine a mature Diamond realizing she does not have a healthy childhood. And being more willing to admit to that to the Crusaders.
(Not counting the EqG/human version, as in a way that’s a completely different character.)
I think some of the writers forget/or are unaware Filthy Rich wasn’t a bad guy originally.
The show uses her?
Still better than the show’s use of her.
Scootaloo: I think what my associates are trying to say is that we’re looking into the retirement home fire and were won- DID FILTHY DO IT!?!
Diamond: Scootlaoo! I admit my dad isn’t quite as nice and polite as your, uh… as Apple Bloom’s family or as amazing as Sweetie Belle’s sister, but he’s not some kind of HAS THAT EVER WORKED!?!
Scootlaoo: no, no, it hasn’t…
Old habits die hard but she’s trying.
