The Zap-o-Lantern is real. These two idiots created it when they stole an unripe zap apple and it turned into a monster. The Zap-O-Lantern survives by sucking the juices from other apples and turned these two into its servants by mutating them inside itself, and has kept them preserved since the legend started. However now they want out and are gathering spit samples from the Apples and RD and Pinkie in order to try and make it take them as its new slaves.
