General Bio:
Whether it’s the rustic country charm or his friendly, down-to-earth manner, Dusty can easily appeal to both strangers and friends alike, which works well for him since he’s eager to please. They can’t help but feel completely comfortable around Dusty’s easygoing, honest nature, and even the most clamped up of ponies find themselves opening up to him for counsel and one or two double chocolate chip cookies. It just warms Dusty’s caring and generous heart like a freshly baked Apple pie to be able to help others, and he’ll do it any way can. One of which, is working as much as possible on the farm, even if he’d rather be inside whipping up a new fangled recipe or listening to Granny go on and on about the family history. He’s a diligent and determined worker when it comes to anything, but unlike his Ma, Dusty knows when to relax and kick up his hooves for the day. As much as he loves Sweet Apple Acres and his family lineage, there are times when Dusty actually wishes he didn’t have to live on a farm, even secretly envying his town friends free and normal lives- just don’t tell Apple Jack!
Dusty may seemed happy-go-lucky at first, but don’t mistake his amiableness for carefree. Whenever he’s in an unfamiliar or dangerous situation, Dusty becomes immediately stressed out and turns into a nervous-wreck, especially when it comes to others. He tends to excessively worry over ponies at times, but it’s more like the “ You really shouldn’t do that have you really thought through this it’s a bad idea did you it least bring some sunscreen?” instead of the “OMG what are you DoiNg get back here you’re going to kill you self n-no don’t do that I’m going to count to tHRee!”. So as a rule, Dusty is a very cautious, never trying anything new unless he feels prepared, which results in him having quite a few back up plans and a lifetime supply of first aid kits. So many ponies depend on him that it’s not surprising that Dusty tries to hide his insecure feelings about his inadequacy. Perhaps it’s why he feels the need to be so prepared for everything?
Being the strong, robust stallion that he is, Dusty has a lot of responsibility on the farm and spends most of his time working the fields, but when the chores are done and evening comes, passerby’s can often hear Dusty casually strumming in the rolling hills on his worn out guitar. Even though Dusty’s special talent isn’t baking, he still does it as an enjoyable hobby and is quite good at it. He’s got a five year winning streak at the Ponyville Pie Baking competitions, but he’s best known in town for his free treat deliveries and the secret cookie stash he keeps for the broken souls who come to his doorstep. Whenever he possibly can, Dusty will leave the farm to go hang out with his friends, even if their idea of fun is sometimes hair-raisingly dangerous and likely to give him a heart attack.
Relationships:
Apple Jack:
For the few short years before Cricket would come along, AJ spent a lot of the time teaching her young colt everything she knew, from Apple bucking at 5 a.m. to playing the old fashioned acoustic guitar. Lucky for her, Dusty was an eager learner and did his best to make his mama proud in everything he did. Even when Cricket was born and Dusty was burdened with more responsibilities than ever, he never once complained and instead took pride in being entrusted with oversight of the farm. Apple Jack is so proud of her responsible, hardworking son and isn’t afraid to show it, which in turn pleases and motivates Dusty to keep on keeping on. But as close as the two are, Dusty could never tell her that he really wants to work in the medical field, since AJ has it fixed in her mind that he will be the one to inherit the farm, and he doesn’t want to disappoint her. So for the time being, he just plays along and does as she asks, hoping one say he’ll have the guts to tell her the truth.
Trouble Shoes:
Even though Dusty’s more of a Mamma’s boy, Dusty does have a good thing going with his Dad. Especially when it comes to deeper issues. When ever Dusty gets stressed out, whether it’s over a hard day or it’s AJ doing things her own headstrong way and not listening to Dusty as she ought to, Trouble Shoes is the first pony Dusty heads too. His laidback, nonchalant attitude along with his short, to-the-point pep talks do wonders in calming Dusty down. Dusty is looked to by so many ponies as a place to vent, so when things get too overwhelming for him, he finds a solid, listening ear in his Dad. As for Trouble shoes, he’ll do what he can to be there for his son, since he tends to understand his sensitive and submissive nature more than Apple Jack does. Aside from their father-to-son talks, the two also enjoy working the fields, making up crazy old songs together, and lazing by the lake at sundown.
Cricket:
Ever since Dusty’s little sister, Cricket, was born she was very weak and fragile, as well as constantly getting sick with a number of other health issues. So as the oldest sibling, Dusty was charged by Apple Jack to be the protective big brother and to always stay by her side.
Dusty took the job seriously and would have done exactly what his mother told him, if only Cricket hadn’t made it so difficult by constantly sneaking off to go exploring or thoughtlessly getting herself into scrapes. Poor Dusty could barely keep up, I mean, you wouldn’t expect an anemic kid to be able to run that fast! Still, he loves his little sis despite her headstrong ways and heart attack inducing feats ̶I̶ ̶s̶w̶e̶a̶r̶ ̶i̶f̶ ̶y̶o̶u̶ ̶d̶o̶n̶’̶t̶ ̶c̶o̶m̶e̶ ̶d̶o̶w̶n̶ ̶f̶r̶o̶m̶ ̶t̶h̶a̶t̶ ̶t̶r̶e̶e̶ ̶r̶i̶g̶h̶t̶ ̶n̶o̶w̶ ̶I̶ ̶w̶i̶l̶l̶ ̶p̶e̶r̶s̶o̶n̶a̶l̶l̶y̶ ̶t̶a̶n̶ ̶r̶i̶g̶h̶t̶ ̶a̶f̶t̶e̶r̶ ̶y̶o̶u̶ ̶b̶r̶e̶a̶k̶ ̶a̶l̶l̶ ̶y̶o̶u̶r̶ ̶l̶e̶g̶s̶!̶ When all is said and done, Dusty is probably closest to Cricket and despite their differences, he enjoys spending quality time with her doing things like teaching her how to bake ( while she sneaks all chocolate chips as he’s talking) or showing her how to properly Apple buck ( even though she has the strength of a new born baby),
Special:
- Dusty may have been raised as a country colt on an authentic farm, but he not quite what you would call a full-blown, devoted country guy. Sure, he’s uses plenty of country-isms, but he doesn’t consistently talk with a country accent and can be really articulate when he wants too. In fact, he mainly uses his accent around his family and kin, then ends up changing it to sound more normal when around town folk. However, when it comes down to it, Dusty is always up for a regular ole barn raising, cider drinking, square dancing, hog washing time.
- Even though Dusty isn’t as clumsy as his Dad, he did inherit Trouble’s inconceivably strong muscles. It’s not all bad; it sure makes for an easier time working with the heavy duty farm equipment, but it’s starts getting awkward when no one can beat you at hoof wrestling.
- Another, smaller past time that Dusty occasionally does is whittling. After he saw Auntie Fluttershy’s bird whistle, he wanted to make one himself that would call the sheep to pasture. Then one thing lead to another and Dusty found himself burning the midnight oil on a whole bunch of little whittling projects. The one he’s most proud of is a small guitar that he did entirely by himself for Cricket on her 4th birthday.
- I reckon it’s time to acknowledge the elephant in the room: Why is Lucky called ‘Dusty’? Well, as a young colt, whenever he’d get sweaty from working out in the fields, he’d get really itchy and so he’d roll around on the ground to making it stop. As you can imagine, sweat and dirt only mixed to make things worse and he’d come walking in day after day covered in a dusty grit. Once AM started calling him ‘Dusty’ in an attempt to insult him enough to take a bath, the name just kinda…stuck. He manages his hygiene better now that he’s an adult, but he still misses behind the ears.
…I like that term…
