Same logic applies though: ponies from the pre-classical era (or whatever the time period prior to Celestia’s reign is called) couldn’t well use a calendar that started years after that bit was minted.
So I hope Brownie wasn’t reading the date off the coin, because if she was, that means that pre-Celestial bit is most likely a poorly-made fake.
Actually, B.C. stands for Before Celestia. It’s a reference to one of previous comics (can’t find it right now, sorry).

Again, not my point: I was just saying that the paradoxical datation given by the inscription (in a calendar that didn’t exist at the time yet) precludes said inscription’s authenticity.

It’s possible to date a coin without such obvious cues; but you’d have to be a specialist to do that.
I mean, if you find a coin with a date from BC engraved on it, there’s no way that inscription dates back from there, since the calendar it’s in didn’t exist at the time (it dates from at least after its invention).
At the time, 69 BC was actually 684 AVC and no one had a clue that seven decades in the future, someone would come along that’d eventually cause their whole calendar to be replaced.
Weeeeeell, you can, as some coins were stamped with certain symbols that were popular at the time for whatever reason (SOOOOOOOO many phallic symbols), and thus, with carbon dating, you can accurately date a coin by its surroundings and/or the design.
You can’t find a coin dated from 69 BC, because it doesn’t make sense to date something in a calendar that didn’t exist yet (unless it’s a fake, of course).
