Don’t forget the release of several Pony.Town Animations by TioRafajp2 through out the 2017’s, introduced the game to a lot of youtubers. I really found out about PT from watching Epic V, she did a lets-play video once and I got curious and tried it out, had fun with the creation and trolling people.  
As of right now tho, you can’t go onto any MLP or art related website without some kind of Pony.town screenshot or character sprite pop up.

Cool. It’s awesome that work happens often for this game! I used to have a group of friends on this game, but none of them would go online, so I stopped playing. Now everything is alien! xD

It got popular around Mid-2016. I remember on the Saturday Streams Aggie and Shi no had, they would occasionally link to it and play aroind in it at the beginning of the stream. At most it would be just the people there in the stream (~10-20 people). It spread via word of mouth, then suddenly the massive influence came from one day. It isn’t quite confirmed, but a lot of the players were possibly from /mlp/. And due to the clones and multiple ponies from on person, you were required to login.
