I’d like to say,
that they used to only be able to transform into the species they were parasites towards: ponies.
But then, Thorax was able to change into Spike, and a rock.
And that one changeling in s6 finale disguised itself as Discord, of all creatures.

That would be a neat detail if the changedlings transformations are more powerful and versatile than the classic black love-sucking changelings.

I don’t remember the changellings as a species to be that powerful with their transformations. Thorax’s reign surely is doing a great job compared to Chrys.
