I think this is supposed to be a fusion of sorts between the Pony of Shadows and the balrog from The Lord of the Rings, so that title is probably a reference to this quote:
 
Saruman: Moria… you fear to go into those mines. The dwarves delved too greedily and too deep. You know what they awoke in the darkness of Khazad-dum… shadow and flame.
 
That said, fire can certainly cast shadow – flames flicker, move and shift quite erratically, creating a constantly moving pattern of light and shadow that under the right circumstances can prove more unnerving that complete darkness.
