The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

It's a cartoon show!
I would say Fluttershy’s demure was rather over done in the past weeks episode, surprised me as an episode coming for Larson.

Yeah, there’s literally nothing that can be complained about Hurricane Fluttershy.

Shame we’ll never see Fluttershy or Rainbow Dash be handled that well ever again. Back to being a one-dimensional showoff and a weak-willed waste of space, respectively.

She got two episodes, and Trixie is better-developed.

Build commie blocks!
The difference being that the animals were racing under their own volition, in that they explicitly knew the risks

In Magic Duel, the animal’s volition is more implicit, in that they are relying on twilight not to drop them. They still agreed to do it, but their safety was in the hands (hooves?) of someone other than themselves.

Fluttershy was probably upset because she had to rely on Twilight for their safety, instead of trusting them to make their own decisions as in MTBPW.

Regardless, that’s my fanwanky interpretation of the facts at hand

Let’s not forget that way back in Best Night Ever, Fluttershy had just about no problem at all with letting Twilight change her mouse friends into horses. All she did here was levitate them for goodness’ sake.

the worst that could happen in that race was that the animals could have died

Twilight’s magic could have turned them inside-out, or sent them to tartarus, or magicked them into tomatoes

“Hurricane Fluttershy” was the perfect example of how to properly handle Shy’s timid nature. It realistically showed what would bring a person (pony, whatever) to be rather shy around people, and what it would take for someone to overcome such a nature when it matters. You don’t simply get over it overnight, it’s something you have to practice constantly, sometimes to little avail. She wasn’t a dirty coward like in this episode (yes, I agree that they kinda messed her character up), she was overcoming a childhood trauma in order to help a group in an important task during their time of greatest need.

It was my favorite episode of Season 2 because every character (even RD) was handled right.

You can’t coerce animals to go where they don’t want to as a pegasus. They can be trusted to take care of themselves in a flying competition where one can always escape upwards.

The thing with Twilight involves a lot of TRUST on her part because the lives of the animals in her care are in TWILIGHT’S hooves when she uses magic on them. They can’t do anything until she finishes. They are truly helpless. Imagine a sensitive animal caretaker such as Fluttershy beholding moments like that.

I don’t think such a time ever existed. I was surprised to hear that people were actually upset with Feeling Pinkie Keen, which I rather enjoyed.

Anyway, I don’t think it’s wrong to lament something about the show when it had a great deal to do with one’s becoming a fan in the first place.

I made a .gif once
I’ve always viewed their “characterization” as a necessarily very sort of weak and general thing, given the nature and demographic of the show. Nopony is really going to change as a character, except maybe Twilight. Rainbow Dash is always going to have a jerk streak (still best pony), Rarity’ll always be neat to a fault, Fluttershy will be weak and helpless until otherwise provoked, and Pinkie Pie is going to continue to employ cartoony antics ad nauseum. It’s the way they were established.

And I miss the days when we didn’t nitpick an episode and then make a huge fucking deal about it.

>Internet anons accusing a character of being passive aggressive

Well you’d know all about that, wouldn’t you.

So it’s out of character for a character that cares deeply about animals to care deeply about her animals?
Background Pony #F779
@TenaxViator: Oh yeah, THAT. Wouldn’t that have been a better place for her to rage? It would have still been funny.
Background Pony #F779
@BP talking about Fluttershy being scared: That isn’t what this is about. The out of character part is the part with the animals; read the image.

I’m treating her characterization here like I do RD in Mare Do Well: as if it didn’t happen, since it is just so terribly done. The difference here is that here Fluttershy isn’t the main character, so the rest of the episode doesn’t suffer.
