If he had that kind of magic in him then it makes sense that Celestia who can recognize magic talent would teach him how to use it effectively and sending letters back and fourth seems like a good use of it. Plus Twilight was such a loner that any company she would get was going to be a good thing and they were connected to each other already so she could warm up to him and Spike stayed with Twilight as an assistant. His ability might have also been a good argument why he was useful to Twilight so Spike was highly advantageous to Celestias plans. Celestia seems to be able to predict things to a certain extent so maybe she let Twilight hatch Spike on purpose. Hatching a dragon egg seems like a weird trial for young unicorns.
