Pretty much. It’s more than obvious they are just hiding their real opinions from him. Who can seriously look at his art and say “oh yeah, this is a real nice piece right here” :D
That’s what I’m saying too, so we’re agreed.
I think what he is saying is that their is a difference between being nice and kissing up to your friend saying everything he said is good so nothing bad can happen. basically, sugar coat your real opinion to have it be something the person hearing it likes to hear instead of telling him the honest truth. Which some body should do and just straight up tell him that his art is terrible.
If they mean the nice things then they aren’t being dishonest. At what point did I ever say being nice is corny and pointless?

Nobody wants to be the “bad guy” that tells the truth and upsets someone. Everyone says they want the truth until they hear a truth they don’t like. On a site as volatile as DA a single misstep can get you raided by a digital lynch mob, and as such people decide it isn’t worth the risk and rationalize allowing someone to keep failing by re-framing it as “politeness” or “consideration”. Problem is now people have actually started to believe this lie and are losing the ability to distinguish nice words from actual goodwill. People are confusing thinking with feeling.

It’s DeviantArt, that website is just one huge echo chamber. Too many people who confuse being supportive with being nice all the time, and say too easy for an artist to block and ignore comments.
