  1. Starlight and Trixie were in the movie. Twice. And the plot was written before either of them were a part of the cast. The fact that they got cameos at all is something, especially considering the movie plot is largely Season 4-era meh and didn’t even need Applejack or Fluttershy to be there, never mind the Power Duo.
     
  2. Starlight isn’t selfish on this level. She’s a prideful unicorn, sure, but she’s proud of her skills. And her whole appearance in Mirror Magic was to prove she’s charismatic even without magic. Where has it ever been implied that she is, or wants to be, the new star?
     
    The cast is, and has always been an ensemble. Occasionally different members of the ensemble get a turn in the spotlight. So why are we upset that the now-larger ensemble cast is giving it’s newer members a couple of spotlights? Do we really need another episode about how Fluttershy needs to be assertive or how Rainbow Dash needs to contain her ego? Do we need another Princess Spike to remind us all that Spike is his own worst enemy?
     
    Starlight isn’t hogging the spotlight. And I’d still have her over the increasingly egregious retreading we get with the original cast.

I don’t really care because they might has well not been there and it wouldn’t have change anything so they are technically nowhere in the narrative and so not in the movie
