Anything and anyone can break social barriers if it has a good message and reach enough people, it doesn’t matter if it’s a kid’s show, a video game, a painting, a book, an activist, a revolutionary or a politician.
 
CalestialBrony may be severely overestimating the power of ponies, but ponies not breaking as many social barriers as Martin Luther King is a completely different matter than it being a kid’s show.

In all seriousness, I’m still waiting for a sports star to support pony. That, in my opinion, would be the most significant barrier for pony to tear down.
