This is why. That, and games like this eventually boil down to doing events for rewards and, as my brother put it, “watching numbers go up.”
Of course, it didn’t help that I accidentally spent a bunch of gems on something I didn’t want, and thought, “Why am I spending money on gems and such if I’m just going to lose them?”

They seriously alienated their financially responsible market in favor of the off chance that little kids, and adults that buy this stuff as a drug will impulse buy it.

That’s right, some people use this kind of thing as a drug. Asserting a fictitious value to something so neatly tangible is analogous to the same stimulation you will receive from Xanthines and Amphetamines.
Allow me to explain. Our body actually has strict bio-mechanical mechanisms that have evolved to handle tangible quantities such as money. By peddling away money on these things, the most primal faculties of our consciousness will treat them as if they’re worth every cent.
Now I got this cute pony, with a comparable value to vital resources such as food. I have complete control over it, and it’s mine. It happens to appeal to my ideals, and imaginations of what is valuable as well.

They will collect seemingly useless things like Pony toys, and Pokemon Cards, and derive a sense of value as they stack, organize, and manipulate these objects.
Someone who has been damaged of their capacity to value physical life are increasingly susceptible. Children with guns pointed at them, told their worthless, their only sense of worth comes from cheap bombast like videogames? They are more likely to buy and invest time in ‘frivolous’ things, they are more likely to buy Pokemon cards, and pony toys, because the value is just as artificial as they perceive to be life.

Yeah it’s the same reason I stopped playing Runecape.
I was a dedicated player 2003, but now micro transactions rule the game, and I’m getting undermined by complete noobs who have overpowered weapons, claim I should sell all my gear for stats that they payed their way through, and this all started because 18m runescape gold is worth 6usd, and I got stuff like catfood, and drugs to buy with that money.
