lol I just read all the comments… yall are all making a big deal out of this, not to mention if you read the comic Twilight and Trixie used an age spell on spike, so i’d say hes about Raritys age now.

And since Twilight and Rarity are assumed to be around the same age (± between a year or two) we can assume that Rarity is about 5 to 6 years older than Spike.
 
The Star Wars prequels did not have much flak against Anakin dating Padame (~5 year difference) Of course, those films had a lot wrong with it. Also they started dating when Anakin was about 19.

Also, Twilight Sparkle went to magic kindergarten. Assuming that she went to magic kindergarten after becoming Princess Celestia’s student and that magic kindergarten is attended at the same age (or equivalent age) that humans attend, Twilight Sparkle would have been 5 or 6 years old when Spike was born.

Wait, did she say that she didn’t know it was Spike?
 
Maybe she does but she isn’t letting on. Such a tactic might allow Spike to be more at ease with the night(?)

And you are entirely welcome to think that, but I disagree. I’d say the CMC are no older than 8 at a maximum. I see no reason to assume that cutie marks=puberty, especially since they aren’t humans and are shown to be capable of both walking and saying their first words at only a month old.

Five years old is a reasonable assumption of her age when she started training under Celestia, given what we know. We know she had no interest in magic before the summer sun celebration, we know she taught herself the basics which is why she got a try out for gifted classes, we know her studies started after she hatched Spike, and we know she took something called Magic Kindergarten.

No one knows how old the CMCs are. If you associate their educational level (and Twilight’s at the time) with kindergarten, then they’re five to six, putting Spike at five to six years younger than the manes (+1 for Flutters).
 
If you subscribe to the CMCs being prepubescent and cutie marks as being an allegory for puberty, then they are likely in the range of 12 to 14, depending on certain environmental and genetic factors. Assuming CMCs age = Twilight’s age before her apprenticeship, then that makes Spike a roughly a decade younger.
 
So, yeah.
 
The argument that Spike is “only a little younger” than Twilight relies on assuming that Twilight was four years old or so when she took her magic exam. Most children at that age can’t write much more than their own name. Yet, concurrent to Twilight’s exam, RD was in flight school, Fluttershy was in a lanky, awkward ‘teenage mare’ phase, Pinkie was fit to do physical labor on her family farm, etc. Not exactly the stuff five year olds do.

The thing is,that would require Twilight to be almost a baby if we are going to consider Spike just a “slightly bit younger”.
 
We can say she wasn’t a teenager when Spike was born,but she certainly wasn’t a foal.

I would argue pretty young, seeing as children of similar age can embark on road trips to big cities unaccompanied and engage in life threatening athletics contests with a similar lack of supervision. People in Equestria just don’t seem to give a damn about their children. Might explain why everyone is so crazy.

It’ll definitely be less troubling when she’s in her thirties and he’s in his mid twenties. A little odd… maybe… but at least pretty normalish.
 
Taken generously, this is a supposedly grown woman falling for a thirteen year old in a costume. This isn’t like the movie “Big.” In real life, we say people like that have some serious problems.
 
We also kind of lock them up, and for pretty good reasons.
 
But then, I imagine if they had an episode where Sweetie Belle had a little girl’s crush on Big Mac, there’s be porn and shipfics out within the hour.

Spike is only five or so years younger then Twiligt. She was about the same size as the CMCs are in the flashback. The age gap isn’t huge.
