Really, it’s more than just the “done by hasbro” thing.
 
They’re both franchises that kicked off in the 80’s and subsequently get referred to as generations (G1, G2, etc.) One was aimed squarely at boys; the other at girls, pretty much linking the two. Currently, both have a tv series that’s been praised by fans for a higher quality of writing than previous series. Many of the characters in said series are updated versions of original characters from the first series as well.
 
So it’s just a little bit more than “done by Hasbro”. The two have been tangled up together for quite a while.

I said it was simple, I didn’t say it made sense.
