the Master has always been male as well and that worked out fantastically - I have high hopes that Jodie will be just as great as Missy is/was, and I’m sorry that you’re stuck in this vendetta against modern innovative culture, also known/interpreted as “THE FEMINISSSSTS”
 
there’s a difference between the remake of Ghostbusters which could’ve been done with better writers/marketing/anything that wasn’t absolute meme shlock, and this, which the main character is clearly an alien who can regenerate into any gender/race, and they want to give something different a try - and the actress clearly loves and wants to get involved with the fandom as opposed to someone who’s only in it for the job
 
have you ever heard of the Corsair, or the General - who, in fact, was a woman who regenerated into a man
 
everyone has different interpretations on what this means, and unfortunately there’s your vocal minority which the rest of us would rather shove into a corner and let you talk amongst yourselves while we hype up to see what Jodie can bring to the role

But seriously, seeing all these misogynistic nerds crying about the show being ruined before we know anything beyond the fact that the lead character is going to be a woman for the first time in the show’s 50+ years would be depressing if I hadn’t already lost all faith in humanity about a year ago. Can’t wait for the reaction to the first dark-skinned Doctor, whenever that happens.
 
(Note: I think it’s OK to be worried that the show will be turned into a platform for third wave feminism or SJWs or whatever political cause is hot right now; my beef is with those who assume that it’s a rock-solid certainty to happen, or who argue that the Doctor should never ever be a woman because reasons.)

It’s not a female actress playing The Doctor that’s the problem. The problem is why. Strong female leads are a good thing and I wholeheartedly approve of them.
 
What fans are worried about is that Doctor Who will become another platform for the social justice warriors to preach from, detracting from what made it good in the first place in order to send a message to “misogynistic nerds” the way Ghostbusters 2016 did.
 
A woman in the leading role should not affect how the story is being told. If it does, that’s when you have a problem.

I actually agree as both a male and a fan of the series. It will be an interesting change and could bring in more fans. I wonder if the main companions will be males now?

that’s what i was getting at. it really doesn’t matter what reason, if any, they had for making such a casting decision if the writing and acting are engaging. but, by that same logic, such a decision doesn’t automatically shield them from criticism. throwing in a female character because “muh feminism” does not protect a bad performance or bad writing.
 
case in point, remember when avgn gave a six minute video listing entirely fair and justified reasoning for refusing to watch ghostbusters 2016? people immediately labelled him as a sexist, in spite of the fact such a label does nothing to challenge his reasoning and ignores his high praise for films like alien.
 
also of importance, you know the article linked by bp here? take a read. that’s newsthump, a british satire site akin to the onion. see for yourself. don’t be suckered. as a whole, reception to this character’s been pretty positive (people seem to care more about her outfit than what’s dangling beneath it).

In a business sense, yes. So long as the show remains popular and the ratings are good then we can we can see more female roles with less backlash. The last thing people want to see is another Ghostbusters 3 fiasco.

there are several things wrong with that, actually. First, it was done for no other reason than ‘muh feminism’ and second, the doctor has ALWAYS been male, so changing it now makes no sense. 3rd wave feminism has infested doctor who and I hate it.

Just clarifying what I meant. I didn’t mean that two roles get genderflipped but just Hermione being male as an act of basically “fixing” the story and if Wonderwoman was male you wouldn’t really have this “female Superman” (as you say) anymore. If you actually did this on both genders sides it would be different. Weird, but different. I read a fanfiction like this once. Also, isn’t Supergirl the female Superman?  
I was really just putting my concerns out there. I admit there is a chance they mean well with this and I guess we have to look at the final product.

The fact that you think any of those examples is even remotely comparable to who plays the Doctor is both hilarious and sad. Though, speaking as a Christian, I find the idea of a Japanese Muslim playing Jesus to be pretty intriguing.

I’d read that Scott Derrickson decided against making the Ancient One an old Oriental guy in order to avoid the hoary old “wise but inscrutable Oriental guru” stereotype. And while I’m happy with Tilda Swinton’s performance, I sorta wish we’d gotten James Hong instead.

Just want to apologized to the people I may have pissed off or whatever hours ago. I was extremely tired after a night of hard work and wasn’t really thinking straight. I basically talked out of my ass, and I must have imagined that I saw previews of the new Doctor Who, when in fact only artwork and pictures exist. I’m going insane.
 
However, what I have seen in speculation in accordance to what the producers said about the new Doctor. Now, while that speculation raises some concerns, because there’s no finished product yet, I cannot pass judgement.
 
I’m really sorry of making an ass of myself, and basically sounding like I don’t know what I’m talking about. Generally, I do know what I’m talking about (at least a little), but in this particular instance I was exhausted and honestly had no idea what I was talking about at that time.
