The writers went out of their way to give the Pinkie Pies signs of life. Creativity and abstract thinking are really hard to fake, but crazy face Pinkie displayed both.

I suppose it’s the ambiguity that the writers left in the episode [that is causing all this]. If they had said [in the episode] that they were just glamours [made by the mirror pool] and that thus, Twilight was just dispelling magic rather than killing clones, most of us [definitely me] would have just let it be.
 
But they didn’t. The clones (at least the first one, anyways) are shown to be capable of independent thought [with the whole “flutterstutter” thing], which casts doubt on their simplicity.
 
And then there’s Twilight’s bloodlust.

That is very coherent. People tend to reflect on their fears what they would do. Probably Twilight as a teacher would be very strict, demanding, and unforgiving.

I agree the whole “Pinkicide” thing wasn’t the best way they could’ve ended the episode.

Pinkie Pie’s clones came from a state of nothingness, thus going back to where they came from was going to a state of nothingness. Even Pinkie Pie would have been sent there, even though it was not her origin.
 
Additionally, it was clear that the Pinkie Pie clones didn’t want to go back, and some of them were in fact terrified of the prospect.

Comments TL;DR, but I noticed one big problem with the whole discussion. It’s made absolutely clear that Twilight sent the Pinkies back to where they came from. There is no implication that they’re harmed.

I think people are taking the “over-analyzing” of others too seriously. People aren’t seriously hating on Twilight here, they’re just having fun finding sinister implications in cartoon plots and making jokes about it. It’s the same as when people joke that the smurfs are communists.

I’m afraid your logic does not hold up to empirical evidence, Drasvin. The rate of accidents due to distracted driving and motorist fatigue goes down, not up, with experience.

It is actually not uncommon for people who fear something to be more meticulous when administering it. It has to do with wanting to one-up those who have an easier time dealing with it.
 
Or maybe she just accepted capital punishment as normal at one point.
 

@Godhead Most of the threats that are sealed away are either too powerful or the sealer didn’t want to kill the target. Discord is quite possibly the most powerful entity on their planet. The Elements of Harmony, the most powerful magic known to ponykind, is only capable of sealing him away. The Elements might have been able to kill Nightmare Moon (assuming the EoH are capable of killing somepony in the first place), but Celestia still cared deeply for Luna and could bring herself to kill NMM, even with all of Equestria hanging in the balance. No idea why they didn’t kill Sombra in the first place. Maybe his powers atrophied over the years, or there’s more to that little story that we don’t know about.

It seems to me that even if it was “murder”, the crime itself would have been severely attenuated since the circumstances and consequences were not nearly as bad had somepony knifed another pony or something.
 
(Also, fic idea: Some shadowy group uses the mirror pool to make compliant clones of certain ponies in power.)

@BP For most people that do that, there are other factors, such as pushing themselves past the point of exhaustion. Also most people get careless with drive because they do it enough that it becomes routine and the brain is able to create shortcuts. And driving is also a fairly complex task, as a driver must pay attention to multiple factors simultaneously and react accordingly. The Pinkie Clones had a single simple task that wasn’t routine for them.And none of them failed by falling asleep. They were all distracted by something more fun than the wall of drying paint.
