It’s better than I make it sound. It’s just that it hit a very raw nerve because, as a parent, if two people I trusted with my children’s well being pulled an end run on my parental authority in such a manner about such an important topic it would make for some very, very uncomfortable silences at Thanksgiving for a decade or so.

Because the fandom loves shipping stories. I think that it was an attempt to set up conflict… making Spike look like the bad guy for interfering in his teenaged daughter’s sex life. The fact that Luna and Cadence set up the rendezvous is glossed over after a chapter, and Twilight “punishes” Spike by setting him up on blind dates with a geriatric, a nun, Cadence, and (Spike is straight) the griffon boy and a Viagara-popping Shining Armor. Once again, I’m talking about this from a minority opinion. Everyone who comments on the story seems to think that it’s fine and even laudable that the princesses (except Celestia) were setting this up without Spike’s knowledge. Read the story and decide for yourself.

This image is based on the story The Dragon and His Daughter by two different authors. [spoiler]The first author was writing a story about Spike raising an adopted child, eventually as a single father doing so after the death of his wife Rarity. The second author picked up from there and wrote a story about every pony trying to get Allie, Spike’s now teenaged daughter, into bed with a griffon boy. The story has 1000/25 like/dislike ratio, so I’m obviously in the absolute minority with how I feel about it.

A wonderful scene. The story this is based on was good right up until it became a shipping story instead of a story of Spike’s attempt to have a family. What Cadence and Luna do next is an awful betrayal of Spike’s trust and his daughter’s well-being, though.
