Well at least that's cleared up.
We still have questions on why she hated cutie marks since
1) She wanted to study magic with Sunburst in Canterlot where they could both study magic to their hearts content
2) Getting a cutie mark at the same time as Sunburst was what Starlight admitted she wanted, yet it wouldn't have made any difference at all, since she already had the magical ability but her parents weren't around most the time
3) Being sent to Celestia's school would of made latch-key situation far simpler
4) She could have easily shown her parents on the times they were there one of her high magic spells and been sent there.
Why she was hung up on cutie marks since not having one was not even the real(albeit temporary) obstacle for joining Sunburst is still an unknown. All her motivation would of been directed to her mostly absent parents.
They both loved magic and they both intended to go to Celestia's school, so its obvious she wanted to join him, but its likely we'll never get a real answer to that.
