Equestrian Twilight had more friends and social contacts with others as a filly than Starlight ever did.  
Fluttershy also only had RD as a friend prior to befriending animals and discovering her talent. She was VERY timid in season one when she made her first real friendship with the Mane 6. She was however very careful by nature to not cross any lines with others.  
Starlight on the otherhand, seemed to have never developed any moral boundaries before meeting Twilight and the others. Even now, she often violates others unintentionally.
 
Fluttershy also had a functioning family, minus her brother.

But you had friends after them, right? Starlight by her own words to Twilight never made another friend after Sunburst moved away. Plus he became basically the one link she had to her life before she spiraled into going “completely evil” as she put it.

It’s either something in her upbringing and or something in her past relationship with Sunburst that made her grow ultra attached to him.  
Maybe Sunburst was the only pony Starlight’s overbearing parents allowed her to hang out with, making time with him a welcome break from endless and grueling magic studies her parents kept pushing on her at a young age.
 
Sunburst’s family being friends to Starlight’s family.  
Whatever it was, I’m placing bets that her family had something to do with what made the current Starlight we know at the present.

Well one reason is he was her first friend, and apparently the only one she really made until she got redeemed. Really says something about how socially awkward she was even as a filly.

We still don’t know why she likes the guy so much. When he left for magic school, it traumatized her even though for others it would’ve been completely mundane. When they were reuniting, the thought was so stressful, it made her feel PTSD. Now look at her waiting for him to arrive. She’s jumping around, talking to random ponies about him. Starlight is crazy for Sunburst.

Well here’s a headcanon. Take it with a grain of salt but if a pony needs to learn about friendship, how can said pony tell the difference between platonic and romantic feelings? If Starlight has a crush on Sunburst, she probably wouldn’t even know and think its just a normal feeling towards a friend she really likes.

That and well I’d say the amount of stress, guilt and worry Starlight ahs subjected herself to over the past two seasons may be as bad as any punishment she was likely to get.

In the Season 6 premiere, she was so nervous she barely had the courage to see him for the first time in years. And after they met they had to lie to each other to cover up their flaws. Now she’s super crazy over him, gushed about how much they had in common, and can’t sleep from the thought of spending time with him.
 
Then it turns out they grown so much apart from each other, they barely have anything in common anymore. It gets worse because Glim wants so much to relive the only good thing in her past, while Sunburst wants to move on. And then they panic over the fact that they can’t bond as well as they had expected.
 
Not to mention Glimmer getting cucked by TWILIGHT so bloody hard.
 
I understand that Glimmer never really received any direct punishment for her crime, but I think this is Karma’s way of getting back at her after two seasons of Karma-dodging.
