Ah.
Her real name kinda makes more sense.
The weird thing is, based on the book, that’s her INTENDED USE for her horn; her “talent” is making fireworks, so shooting exploding fireballs out is what she was destined to do no matter what.
Yeah I figured the second part was interpretation, but still, didn’t realize they actually addressed it at all. I’ve been (purposefully) keeping away from any of the pre-movie stuff like comics and books, until I’ve seen the movie.
My first line was about as far as the books went. The rest is my interpretation, but it’s not contradicted by the books/show yet.
Basically after breaking it, she tries to use magic and it always goes badly. Her friends are afraid to be around her after seeing how dangerous it is. IIRC after she joins up with the Storm King, she spends a great deal of time practicing with the “help” of Grubber (mostly as moral support?) in order to gain some semblance of control, but it’s still destructive.
It might as well be, her horn being broken means the only magic thing she can do is an uncontrollable short range spray of raw magic. Not exactly the most practical thing. Comic even showed most of the time its used more as a distraction.
I didn’t realize the books actually went into any detail on that, cool.

But still… magic. I don’t know why this is such a difficult thing to grasp. Just a quick jaunt around the
Broken Horn
tag will net you a bunch of examples where broken horn = Less than an Earth pony. It’s been a fanon thing for a long time.Kind of like a wizard needs a wand to cast types of magic. They can cast magic with a broken wand but not well or controllable. At least in the harry potter idea of a wizard.
All ponies have magic as we seen Tirek steal it from them. Unicorns just have a catalyst to use their magic directly and Tempest Shadow has a broken one.
Tempest Shadow is a wizard with a broken wand. She can cast magic but may blow her hand off. since her “wand” is on her head she may blow her head off.
It’s not “spell beam”, more like “hose spray of raw magic”.
Yeah, from the books released so far, it’s not that she’s incapable, but it’s nearly uncontrollable for her.
It seems the intact horn is more an instrument that allows them to focus and control their magic, rather than the actual source. Dealing with a broken horn seems more like a volume dial with two settings: 0 and 11.
But it’s still there. Lots of people subscribed to the idea that if a unicorn’s horn was broken, they were functionally the same as Earth ponies then (actually, less so, given that they have plant growing magic, per the show.)
Her magic is like Kylo Ren’s lightsabre it’s rugged and unstable
