Well, he along with Tempest was defected to the ponies’ side and knows peace and harmony.
Derpy didn’t save the day. She was caught in the crossfires because she didn’t see the obsidian orb that Tempest throw at and freezes her instead of Twilight.
I’d love to believe that is true.

Derpy literally saved the day at the beginning of the movie, that’s why she’s in this shot and why she’s specifically going to hug Twilight. Can’t say HOW without spoiling it.

In this book, he’s sad because he messed up as Tempest’s evil sidekick, because good evil sidekicks don’t run and hide instead of trying to stop the heroes.
