Humans (Homo sapiens) are mammals which is a class of animals yet they are not seen as animals because they are sentient.
They share certain features with other mammals. Technically there are other members of the subtribe Hominina which aren't animals either but unlike them we are not extinct so we commonly refer to fleshly beings either as animal or human.
Changelings seem to be insects which is a class of animals yet they are sentient so they would not be considered animals.
As long as they share certain features with other insects they will be classified as such, tho.
None of the class of insects features exclude sentience.
