I did find all this a bit odd too. I would have preferred it if all that shoveling had turned him into a muscled up badass, rather than convenient divine intervention.
 
He was my favorite character in the comics too.

Considering his cutie mark is the valknut, a symbol some theorize is connected to Odin and which symbolizes the power of the god to bind and unbind, I wouldn’t be surprised if he did have some divine help.
