Thats the problem of legends in general…..APplejack heard that version from who ever told her that….and someone else told that version and things got foggy…..

You cant get accourate info of 1000 years things unless you have reliable witness and writings. I Feel the comics woudl had been what happened really, but AJ got the version she got told and she added her own stuff.

It’s wierd. In the comic they said he worked very hard to go from scrawny to being bulky and strong and that he legitimately earned his strenght.
In the episode instead he just power ups out of nowhere, he didn’t earn it at all.
Basically ruins the moral of the comic book.

However, one can make the argument that this was a legend told by applejack and she just made some things up. But still… could have been made MUCH better

His cutie mark is the sign of Odin!
“Whosoever holds this shovel, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of… ROCKHOOF.”

The Shovel of Rockhoof is probably a magical artifact floating somewhere around Equestria.
Along with the Flower of Mistmane and that dragonfire-proof shield of Flash Magnus’s.

I expect they’ll show up in a future episode as the only things that can stop the season’s world-threatening villain.

Since he’s an Earth pony, we know Earth ponies have some magic affinity with the rock and soil and we already know of a cult of rock-worshippers (Pinkie’s family), it’s not too farfetched to believe the soil itself granted him superpowers when it saw him struggle. It’s also part of most legends that there’s Deus ex Machina powers involved.

So his special talent is divine intervention? Would definitely explain the sudden bulking up.

Well to be fair they did call those stories “legends”
So they probably have a certain part of truth to them.

Anyone here play Exalted? These circumstances and sudden power boost are the hallmarks of a Solar Exaltation occurring. A moment of incredible heroism in the face of impossible odds, with nothing less than certain doom to follow should he fail, this is how most such Exaltations occurred, that’s all I could think of when I saw this happening.
