Sure, the ancients in China were clinging to some fantastical theories about how space works (including the evil sun-eating dragon), but at least the Chinese were actually the first to identify sunspots on the sun (while the European astronomers mistaken them for extra planets). In fact, the Cantonese word for "eclipse" (shih) literally translates as "to eat"
