Description
I was thinking about how some people really like the new technicolor changelings, while others wish they’d have stayed dark and spooky. That got me thinking about changelings in general, and how the name stems from stories of the fey. Any D&D or Shakespeare cans will know about the Seelie and Unseelie Courts. The Light and Dark fairies. Why not have them both! This way we can keep adorkable Thorax, and yet not have to reform Chrysalis.

Exactly.
Insects have patterns and multitudes of colors.
Changedlings have about 6 and no real discernable pattern, just blocks of color.
I get the distinct feeling they tried to make them like the Ponies pastels without really knowing how to do that.
I think at least some, possibly most, of their fanciful colors are derived from actual colorful insects. The problem is, you can’t just take one or two colors from, say, a junebug’s shell and smack it on a 2d flash character and not lose everything that made the junebug look good.

Garish, bright, clashing colors are a hallmark of Fae creatures
First thing I thought when the Skittlebugs first appeared was that the Changelings had defected to the Seelie Court.
True but even them theres a form of cohesion to them, and even seelie fae can be a bit darker or restrained in their forms.
The Changedling just kinda…clash and clutter, for lack of an actual term to use.
Theres no real pattern other then bright and skittle-e.

“I am the world’s only seelie sidhe. And I will not stop now.”
One of my favorite lines from any form of literature.
oh man I remember that fic! some deepest lore right there
And to be frank, Celestia uses divine providence tp jistify everything she does.
At least Chrysalis is actually competent, and not dependent on an artifact to do her dirty work.
Also, depending on how you call the comics, Celestia hasn’t exactly given Chrysalis a reason to want to coexist.
And Starswirl is arguable their creator but he peaced out like a sitcom father and ignored them after they came to be.
