I hate to say it there are small sections of the fandom that are extremely petty about the show. Honestly I bet you when Larson originally wrote this episode it was far less meta about the whole thing and was just basically Ponyville (or maybe Equestria as a whole) arguing about who was the best pony. What the other writers changed was making it more meta and about the dumb parts of the fandom.

To be honest, the episode as a whole was kinda contradictory. It would have been better if it was less mean, and if the moral was along the lines of “you can have different opinions, but be respectful when discussing them”, and maybe have some of the fanponies being kind about it.

Funny, the meta-ness seems right up his alley. Especially the “Twilight was better before she got wings!” line.

Sometimes the truth is ugly.
