I think as I tried to point out many times before, it wasn't about fans, it was about the downside to popularity, and how you should deal with it, without becoming sour, mean, or sad about it. The fandom nods were just meant as li'l jokes/nods for the fans to chuckle at. I've seen fandoms portrayed much worse before in other shows.
Paul Dini, and such made fun of nerds in "Freakazoid," and such, but said they actually love nerd/fandom culture, and consider themselves nerds too. (Like when the Nerdator captured them in one episode of Freakazoid.)
