Yeah, I guess I am. I’ve watched most of the Equestria Girls content; all I see is how it’s carefully and cleverly constructed to appeal directly to the brain of the average pubescent girl. It’s not as bad as some stuff out there (Monster High, I’m looking in your direction!), but it’s clearly a more shallow and inferior adjunct to the main ponyverse, aimed squarely at 10 to 14-year-old girls.

I think that’s more the fault of Boulder Media than DHX. In the movie they brought that up they were complaining more that they couldn’t get the crowd to look big enough with the characters they had. Boulder I guess just gives fewer damns about that.
 
I can see how it’s way harder to grind out extras in EQG than it is in the horse series. Since with a pony it’s pretty much just a pallet swap with a different hair style. But the extras in EQG already have the curveball that is clothes, and trying to generate a bunch of pallet swapped extras with identical clothes would be really noticeable.

I really don’t want to say that’s lazy on the part of DHX, because I understand where you’re coming from, but it is. Some editor saw this scene, saw multiple copies of the same characters, and said, “Eh, screw it. The kids won’t be able to notice anyway.”

I remember I think it was in the commentary for Friendship Games that the hardest thing was finding ways to fill up crowd shots since they only have so many background characters they can use. That’s definitely happening here. I can already see three Tennis Matches and two Sweet Leafs
