In terms of development, DHX first created the other five pillars several months through over a year ago. The characters were then referenced to IDW for LoM, then a yonk after which, it was revealed through various venues including a DF teaser that the pillars would be in the show.
 
Of course, it’s assumed production began a couple months before IDW began their own production phases of the first few issue of LoM. However, to the Layman, typically us, the pillars debuted in the comics, which have been consistently tied to the show moreso since Issue 51, if it wasn’t exceedingly obvious to those who stay far away from the River Nile. >w<

Ostensibly the show writers thought of them first and were in the process of making the episodes regardless of IDW’S input.
 
IDW was apparently given the scripts and characters models, tnen proceeded to craft stories around it.
 
The crux of the argument being ‘Even though IDW debuted the characters, plot points, locations, etc first and directly propped up their appearance in the show itself, because IDW employees were apparently not the ones to originally think of them that means they can’t be canon.’
 
Well. They’re technically right. But that would still mean we’ve reached the point where “canon” and “non-canon” has become obsolete.

I haven’t seen the movie yet but I have no reason to suspect it is not canon.  
Books are also canon. The only thing that is not is comics.

Eqg movies have always been canon. It’s bad that they are canon but they are and we have to live with it.
