I see him more of a Pony who lost all sanity and part of the mental facultaties after becoming a shadow, locked and locked in the ice. He wasn’t a god like Nightmare Moon or Discord, so he would snap pretty easily.
 
Also, I’m waiting for a Tragic Villain.

He’s strange. I’m not entirely certain he was ‘alive’ in the traditional flesh-and-blood sense in the first place. Undead through sheer magic power would be more what I’d think. It was more an evil spirit/demon type thing with him, and, from a pure flesh and blood perspective, he wasn’t technically ‘alive.’
 
On the other hand, the body he was able to construct in the few seconds he did was more or less DBZ’d. in that sense, he was pretty much murder-happy-funtime’d, to paraphrase Toby Turner.
 
I dunno, I think I’m still waiting for a villain to go after Twilight herself in that sort of relentlessly destructive way, instead of threatening all of Equestria.

Nah, more like an cosmic event were they all return and NMM gets her own independent form. Then they make an equestria league of evil. Then they are defeated by an obvious fatal mistake like any other children’s cartoon.

He exploded into lots of gems. Either he’ll rejoin T-1000 style or someone will do something stupid like make an amulet out of one of the gem fragments.

The developers left ambiguosly. He pretty much exploded, but his horn survived, and we all know what his horn can do, so yeah.
 
He’s dead….for the moment, but I doubt he would return unless in a movie were all villains return.
