My wife’s father never knew his mother’s real name, for basically this same reason; Grandma-san came from a wealthy Zaibatsu family in Japan who disowned her for falling in love with an American occupation soldier after The War, and when he went back to Texas after his deployment she went with him and changed her name, and never again wrote or spoke the name she was born with.
 
…This episode is kinda gonna destroy my wife when she finally gets to see it.

That’s one of the details that I really love about this episode. For years it was theorized by fans that ponies underwent full name changes due to certain reasons (hence Carrot Top/Golden Harvest), and this episode made it unambiguously canon. ^_^

I think one of the main reasons for including The-Pony-Formerly-Known-as-Chiffon-Swirl in the episode was to make it clear that some ponies change their names after marriage, so that Pear Butter changing her name seemed less crazy.

It’s now canon that ponies can change their name. Mrs Cake changed hers to Cup Cake. The children probably assumed their mother had changed hers to Buttercup, and had no reason to ask otherwise. It’s not that hard.

That has nothing to do with the fact that, as we’re told in the episode, Applejack and her siblings only ever knew their mom as “Buttercup”; she never told them about her real name (Pear Butter) or her past life, at least not in detail. If you want, I can quote the line in the episode where this is said (from the transcript on the wiki).
