Him being closeted / in denial wouldn’t change the fact that his target was primarily gay people, because they were gay; the homophobia he’d been inculcated with was strong enough to not just not accept himself, but take it out on innocents in the most horrendous way he could manage.
 
In the end, a lot of this reads out as “Oh, I haven’t seen any gays beaten in the streets of my city this year, so really I don’t know what the fuss is all about”.

It’s called America, I’ve had people attack me when I was kid all the way up to even now, I have been nearly run over and just a year and half ago me and my cousin were stalked and attacked at a fair because a couple of them recognized me from highschool. I have been denied work in the town I live near over it, my local dollar general told me “we don’t plan on hiring fags now or ever”.
 
We still have a long way to go.

This is a comment I see brought up again and again, but I can only find cases were there were them being gay was not the reason for murder. It just happend to people that were gay for other reasons.

Yes they, in fact, are comparable because they share the same foundation of thought, i.e. they both posit that there are certain immutable characteristics which a person should be proud of. I don’t think this line of thinking is healthy for any group exactly because it leads to things like the Nazis and people who believe in white pride. Yes, the gay pride movement might not have fallen to the pathology of group pride yet, but it easily can.
 
My objection is based on my principle that people should neither think positively nor negatively of any characteristic of themselves which they cannot change. If you want to feel pride for something, make it something you, as an individual, have done.

I think it should be retired for many reasons, some principled, some pragmatic. But if I had to give one reason that sums it up, it would have to be because it’s creating a generation of collectivists who see the world through the lens of groups and not individuals. The last time we went down that route, 100 million people died at the hands of communists, and before that, there was the holocaust.
 
I’m not saying I believe that will happen again, but I am saying that the reasons for it happening are manifesting again in mainstream left-wing thought, and that is the single most important political issue of our day, even if it seems contrived, and overly-abstract and too far-reaching to believe upon first hearing.
 
And I don’t think any amount of gay pride in the west will change how Saudi Arabia views homosexuality because the people there simply don’t have the value set necessary to be accepting of differing people. There is such a foundational difference of values between western liberal societies and any non-democratic society that the idea of gay pride is simply beyond them for now. You would have to see these countries through decades upon decades of progress towards liberalism before you could even begin to talk about gay rights.
 
And It’s my belief that the best way for gays to be accepted into society is to let it happen naturally. I believe that sexual non-conformity has passed a threshold where it will only become more and more accepted into society with time. And these things do take time. We’re talking about a kind of change that can only take place on the generational scale, and anything to expedite that process can easily lead to pushback from those who are more conservatively inclined.

It’s still the case today that gay people are marginalized and ridiculed in the US. Just look at this very fandom for colourful cartoon horses, where a great many members rush to proclaim “I’m not gay!” at any given opportunity.
 
Look at how the situation is outside of the US and “western world”, where gays are silenced, imprisoned, beaten, or just outright murdered.
 
You say that sexuality isn’t a choice, and yet you think it wrong that in this world these people can’t be openly proud of who they are and express their existence for a mere 24 hours in the few places on the planet where they won’t be treated like subhumans for it? You think the entire thing should just be “retired” because gays can marry now in a few countries and US TV shows have token gay characters?

Although I’m not overly fond of national pride, I can see how it is a legitimate (and necessary) form of pride, since each individual contributes to the prosperity of the nation. As such, the prosperity of the nation is the doing of the individual. However I really don’t see how Christian holidays are at all analogous.
 
Now, if I felt American patriotism was seriously going off the rails, then I would be opposed to people pushing their national pride and try to provide a corrective force to that movement.

I don’t think it is absurd to call out an image featuring a gay pride flag as playing into the identitarian culture which characterizes the modern-day western world. People identifying too strongly with their immutable characteristics (i.e. race, gender, and sexual orientation) is what created SJWs in the first place, and since SJWs are currently a problem, playing into that mindset really doesn’t help any.
 
Being opposed to the idea of gay pride doesn’t make one anti-gay any more than being opposed to white-pride makes someone anti-white. I don’t think people should be proud of anything about themselves that they didn’t achieve.
