but who the heck feels the need to specify that they love them “as a pet”?
 
Characters who are controlled by the comedic sense of irony, the same sense of irony that makes Bad Things happen when they say “Well, it can’t get any worse.”
 
…or rather, the Irony makes the characters say those precise words right before the Bad Things happen.

Lots of people and ponies alike, I would assume say “I love you” to their pets, but who the heck feels the need to specify that they love them “as a pet”?  
Unless there’s some sort of telepathic link between them and their pet, and they know that their pet loves them as a mate.
